Northwest Coast Flat Design
Instructor: Tsungani

Explore how the forms and elements of Northwest Coast art come together to form designs that represent hereditary crests. Learn how these designs are interpreted when carved into wood and painted on masks. You will learn basic forms and begin to work on layout of designs. Bring a sketchpad and pencils.

Introduction to Woodcarving
Instructor: Tsungani

Tsungani will discuss tribal styles and the variations through time along the coast. He will demonstrate tools used in the creation of ceremonial masks, including the D-adz, elbow adz, crooked knives, straight knives and slant blades. Tsungani will demonstrate different techniques used in creating masks, rattles, totem poles, bowls and complex masks. Pieces from the family collection will be shared to increase your understanding of how complex masks work. You are welcome to bring a piece of your own for critique.

Advanced Woodcarving
Instructor: Tsungani
Saturday, March 8th, 2008. 11:00am - 4:00pm

This class will encompass the final stages of creating a mask, including detail carving, sanding techniques, painting and assembling complex masks. Finishing information including setting hair, abalone inlays and much more will be shared. Several carvings at various stages of completion will be used to demonstrate these techniques. Come with your questions.

Drawing from Native Plants
Instructor: Julia Stoll

Enjoy viewing and drawing native plants introduced to the grounds of the Lelooska Cultural Center. We will discuss some uses of native plants by First Peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Julia has been teaching drawing and painting for nineteen years and has a special interest in cultivating native plants. Beginning or advanced students are welcome. Drawing boards, bond paper, ebony pencil & eraser will be supplied. Optional: Bring your sketchbook. This class will be held walking the grounds and drawing in the Lelooska studio.

Miniature Button Blanket
Instructor: Mariah Ts'igilhilaqw
Saturday, July 12th, 2008. 12:00-2:00pm at the Lelooska Family Gallery.

Learn the history and significance of how the Button Blanket became part of the culture of the Native Peoples of the Northwest Coast. Mariah Ts'igilhilaqw will share the different materials and techniques used in creating a button blanket. Then, create your own miniature button blanket from felt.

Evening programs

Approximately two hours in length. Admission is $10 per person, $7.00 children 12 and under. Evening Programs begin at 7:00pm. Advance reservations are necessary!

The Lelooska Family brings to life the masks, stories, songs and dances of the Sewide lineage of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) in the glimmering firelight of their cedar ceremonial house. Approximately two hours in length, Fall Evening Programs begin at 7:00pm.

School programs

We are now taking reservations for our Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 school programs. Admission is $5.00 per person adult or child. School programs are most appropriate for children in the 3rd or 4th grades, however other age groups can be accommodated. Space is limited, reserve early! Programs begin at 10:30am and are approximately one hour in length, followed by a visit to the Lelooska Museum.

New funding ideas: Schools have shared with us that some companies will fund field trips for school groups when they have employees involved with that school.

Response to the living history program from students

I liked the museum because you could see how life was back in the old days. You and your people share the most wonderful stuff. When I grow up and have children I'm going to take them to your great stuff.
