Step inside our ceremonial house with your students and learn about the significance and importance of this building, which has been used for decades for potlatches and educational experiences. Learn how it is constructed and what is represented in the carved house posts, welcoming figure, screen, drum and copper. Students will learn about the importance of salmon and cedar, and how these resources have influenced life on the Northwest Coast. In addition, they will learn about the influence of the fur trade and the origins of the ceremonial robes, known as button blankets.
There will be an explanation of how masks are created and used. Examples of the different stages in the creation of these masks will be discussed and on display, from a block of cedar to a completed mask. Rattles, whistles, and drums that are used in the Ceremonial House will be shared and demonstrated. A story will be shared from Chief Tsungani’s lineage, along with some details about a couple of the ceremonial masks. Your students will have a behind-the-scenes look at how a dancer puts on these masks and how they are used, from an articulated mask to a transformation mask.

Woodcarving Experience – 10:30 AM
- 1-2 hrs
- 40 Guests Maximum
- $15 Per Person (Processing Fee Included)
- Ages 6th grade to Adult
Northwest Coast Woodcarving is one way in which a noble family shares their rights, crests and privileges that have been handed down through their family since the beginning of time. These crests, which manifest themselves as animals, supernatural beings and ancestors are most commonly shared through their story, song, mask and dance during a potlatch.
Although many First Nations people along the Northwest Coast have a carving tradition, the styles and variations vary throughout the region.
Chief Tsungani will be discussing both the history, and techniques used in woodcarving. He will demonstrate the tools used in the creation of ceremonial masks, discuss the type of materials used and give your students the opportunity to see a block of wood begin to transform into a carved mask. Hands-on examples will be passed around so that students can deepen their understanding.
Included In this Field Trip:
- 30-45 Minute Presentation & Woodcarving Demonstration with Chief Tsungani, followed by Question and Answer time. Duration is dependent on age level.
- 30-45 Minutes in our Museum for a self guided look at the art and artifacts of Native Peoples from across North America. An Interpreter will welcome you and be available to answer questions.
- Additional time on Grounds to explore.
If you are unable to visit us in person, or for use in addition to our in person events, we have two options.
